A Checklist for Adding a Teen Driver to Your Policy
What actually changes when a new driver joins your household, and how to keep the cost reasonable.
2 min read
Adding a teen driver to your policy is one of the more expensive moments in owning a car, and it usually arrives without much warning. A permit shows up, then a license, and suddenly your rates change. That number isn't fixed. A few decisions actually move the cost, and a few things are worth doing regardless of price.
Call us as soon as the permit shows up
Most policies extend coverage to a permitted driver automatically while they're supervised, but we'd rather confirm that with you in writing than have you assume it. Once they're fully licensed, they need to be listed on the policy before they drive solo, no exceptions.
Ask about every discount that applies
A few of these get missed simply because nobody asks:
- Good student discount, usually for a B average or better
- Driver's education completion discount
- Defensive driving course discount
- Telematics or usage-based programs that track actual driving habits
- Student-away-at-school discount, if they head to college without a car
Quick tip: A good student discount alone can offset a meaningful chunk of the rate increase, ask about it every renewal.
Match the car to the driver
If your teen will mostly drive one specific vehicle, insuring that car, rather than the newest or fastest one in the driveway, is usually what keeps the cost down. An older, well-rated sedan is almost always cheaper to insure than anything sporty.
Set the ground rules before the keys
A lot of the risk in the first year comes down to habits: phone use, nighttime driving, how many friends are in the car. It's worth writing down a few house rules before the first solo drive, not after something happens. We're glad to talk through what actually shows up in claims if it helps make that conversation easier.
Coverage doesn't stop at the driveway
If your teen also drives a farm truck, an ATV, or equipment around the property, mention that too. It's often a different coverage question than the family car, and it's worth getting right before they're out on it alone.
Get real numbers, not a guess
The best way to know what it'll actually cost is to call us with your teen's information. We can usually give you real numbers the same day, not just a range.
